Abstract

Dogs are born without teeth and these structures appear over time. At around 150-160 days, the primary dentition is complete with 28 deciduous teeth. From approximately three months of age, the deciduous teeth are replaced by permanent teeth, and at around 180-200 days, the dog has a permanent dentition, consisting of 42 teeth. Primary teeth present at the time their permanent successor erupts are considered persistent. The most common cause of persistent deciduous teeth in dogs is the incorrect eruption path of the permanent teeth. Clinically, persistent deciduous teeth can cause malocclusion, halitosis, crossbite, predisposition to periodontal diseases, pain, difficulty eating, accumulation of dental calculus, dental crowding and gingival alterations. Diagnosis is clinical, but radiographs are necessary to detect pathological changes, mainly tooth root ankylosis. The treatment of persistent deciduous teeth is tooth extraction. Tooth extraction must be performed with care to avoid iatrogenic injuries. Although not considered serious, the consequences of persistent deciduous teeth in dogs can be severe. Therefore, the disease should not be neglected.
