Abstract

ABSTRACT

Objective: To verify the anatomical differences of babies with cleft lip and palate and the speech therapy interventions proposed for breastfeeding this pediatric population, aiming to prevent complications, support breastfeeding and promote health in the first months of life. Method: Systematic review in the databases of the Virtual Health Library (VHL) and PubMed, in Brazilian Portuguese, English and Spanish, in the last 10 years. The PRISMA methodology was applied using descriptors in double association to identify eligible studies. Results: Of the 287 initial studies, 9 were included in the study, 3 in English (33.3%) and 6 in Brazilian Portuguese (66.7%), the oldest study was from 2015 and the most recent from the year de 2022. Great variability was observed in the methodology adopted for the application and verification of cleft lip and palate, most studies described difficulties in breastfeeding, these being from different specialties and one from the field of speech therapy. Conclusion: Babies with cleft lip and palate have anatomical differences that allow breastfeeding with or without adaptations. The literature showed the little appreciation of the speech therapist and the low rate of publications related to the theme

Descriptors: cleft palate, cleft lip, breastfeeding.
