Abstract

Vestibular Schwannoma is a benign tumor originating from Schwann cells, whose main symptom is unilateral hearing loss. This literature review of the integrative type sought to assess whether the Cochlear Implant can be an effective treatment alternative for patients with Vestibular Schwannoma, identifying the possible benefits that the Cochlear Implant provides for the patient with Vestibular Schwannoma, in addition to verifying the possibility of improvement in the speech recognition and sound discrimination after tumor treatment and cochlear implant implantation. For this review, a search was carried out in the electronic databases Medline and Pubmed, with the selection of articles made through the correlation between them with the objectives proposed by our study. Articles that exclusively addressed observational treatment methods, tumors from pathologies such as Neurofibromatosis, among others, were excluded. Through the results of the present study, it is possible to observe that the Cochlear Implant has greater benefit when the patient makes effective use of the device, restoring binaural hearing and auditory skills. The study concluded that the cochlear implant, in most cases, proved to be an effective treatment alternative for Vestibular Schwannoma, bringing benefits to the patient and influencing the quality of life.
