Abstract

Introduction: Hard skills are classically developed during the Dentistry
course, however, the development of soft skills, including empathy and
humanization, are also important for the students. The use of pedagogical
activities with the objective of developing these soft skills is an important
challenge of education in dentistry. Material and methods: The aim of this
paper is to present how the realistic simulation methodology can be used
throughout the dentistry training to develop soft skills such as empathy and
humanization. Results and discussion: Good-quality health practices such
as ethics, empathy, security, respect, leadership, communication, and
conflict management can be developed when the curriculum structure is
organized for this purpose. The realistic simulation methodology, with
controlled scenarios, followed by debriefing, may allow to carry out a
formative assessment and verify whether the objectives for the
development of empathy and humanization soft skills were achieved by the
students in dentistry.
