Abstract

Shelter Medicine is an emerging field focused on the well-being and management of animals in vulnerable situations. In Brazil, there is a shortage of technical and educational materials in Portuguese, making it difficult to standardize practices in shelters. This study aimed to develop a didactic material adapted to the Brazilian reality and evaluate its effectiveness as a technical tool for veterinarians, managers, and shelter staff. The DADI methodology (Definition, Architecture, Design, and Implementation), commonly used in website creation, was applied to structure the material, which consists of ten sections and 45 chapters covering organizational management, animal welfare, preventive programs, and adoption. The material’s effectiveness was assessed through a questionnaire applied six months after its acquisition, with 46 respondents. Results showed that 82.60% rated the content and structure as “excellent” or “very good”; 78.26% evaluated the visual resources similarly; and 71.73% considered the level of learning/knowledge as “excellent” or “very good.” Overall, 95.65% believe the material achieves its goal of disseminating technical-scientific knowledge, and 100% would recommend the book. It is concluded that the material meets the needs of the target audience, contributes to improving shelter practices in Brazil, and should be periodically updated to keep up with advancements in the field.
