Frequency of extragenital transmissible venereal tumor in Brazil

Abstract

ABSTRACT 

Transmissible venereal tumor (TVT) is a neoplasm exclusive to dogs whose main transmission is through sexual intercourse. The lesions caused by the disease appear mainly on the external genitalia, but it can also affect other locations. In Brazil, the disease has already been diagnosed in 19 states and the Federal District. The objective of this article is to carry out a literature review on extragenital TVT diagnosed in Brazil. For this, a search was carried out on the Google Scholar website using expressions related to the topic. The search period covered five years (2018-2023). 28 articles containing 121 cases of exclusively extragenital TVT were retrieved. An increase in the number of cases of extragenital TVT was observed over time. Regarding the location of the masses, it was detected that more than half of the cases involved the nasal region and the skin. Ocular and anal/perianal TVT were also common. Seven cases presented masses in two locations, both extragenital. Metastases were recorded in four cases. It was concluded that exclusively extragenital TVT showed an increase in frequency over time in Brazil. This fact should serve as a warning to veterinarians who work in the field of dog clinics to appropriately address neoplastic masses that are located in extragenital areas.
