Abstract

The use of antibiotics is the most common method of treating bacterial infections worldwide. The incorrect use of antibiotics has caused bacterial resistance, as well as the incorrect disposal of medications accelerates the process of antimicrobial resistance to drugs. Treatment for diseases caused by superbacteria is longer, more expensive and in many cases without an efficient therapeutic resource, as traditional medicines are ineffective against infections caused by antibiotic-resistant bacteria. The present work sought to understand the association between incorrect disposal of antibiotics and bacterial resistance. The study of improper disposal is necessary to understand the action of man in this cycle of environmental pollution that reflects on public health. The methodology was based on literature review. It can be concluded that most of the population disposes of medicines in inappropriate places, such as common garbage and toilets. It was observed that the population is uninformed of the risks to health and the environment resulting from improper disposal, as well as does not receive information about the use and conscious disposal of drugs, which highlights the lack of guidance and awareness campaigns for the population, in addition to the lack of collection points in drugstores and health units.
