Abstract

Hereditary hemochromatosis (HH) is a genetic disease related to iron accumulation in the body, especially in the liver. Liver biopsy is the "gold standard" protocol to diagnose the liver iron concentration (LIC), but it consist in a highly invasive technique. Other techniques, such as serum marks, are sensitive but nonspecific to LIC. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is very sensitive to the presence of iron in liver. Thus, studies have sought techniques to describe LIC, highlighting the relationship signal-noise-techniques (RSR) and relaxometry. The RSR methods are currently applied in clinical practice, like Rennes"™ protocol. On the other hand, relaxometry (R2 / R2 *) generates more accurate values of LIC, however it requires a costly investment and does not have standardized protocols. MRI is widely available as a noninvasive method, moreover, it has the potential to optimize the diagnosis and monitoring of HH patients.
