Abstract

This study elucidated the relevance of the Ly6C protein in the immune response against visceral leishmaniasis, a severe parasitic disease caused by Leishmania spp. Despite being characterized exclusively in mice, Ly6C has been shown to be essential in various immune cells, including neutrophils, monocytes, macrophages, dendritic cells, and T and NK lymphocytes. Its functions include cell recruitment, migration to infection sites, and the coexpression of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as IFN-γ, TNF, and IL-2. Ly6C+ neutrophils play a role in the early response to infection, while monocytes and macrophages regulate inflammation and promote tissue repair. Dendritic cells, in interaction with CD4+ T cells and NK cells, are essential for granuloma formation and infection control. Ly6C also regulates the adhesion and migration of T lymphocytes to infection sites, facilitating an effective immune response. The analysis highlighted the lack of evidence for Ly6C expression in humans, highlighting the need for further research to explore its role in different models. These findings underscore the potential of Ly6C as an innovative therapeutic target.
