Abstract

Bisphosphonates (BPs) are drugs widely used in the treatment of bone diseases such as osteoporosis and bone metastases, as they inhibit bone resorption by suppressing osteoclast activity. Given the rising demand for dental implants and the challenges posed by poor bone quality in some patients, research has explored the topical use of BPs to enhance osseointegration. This literature review analyzed 51 articles published between 2001 and 2022 to evaluate the local effects of bisphosphonates on dental implants. Studies indicate that topical application via implant coatings, gels, or solutions applied to the implant site increases mechanical fixation, reduces marginal bone resorption, and improves implant stability, without the systemic risks associated with oral or intravenous administration. Despite promising results, there is a lack of large-scale clinical trials with long-term follow-up, and further studies are needed to confirm long-term efficacy and safety.
